Overview

Engineering Biology encompasses the wider capabilities/ecosystem that supports the exploitation of synthetic biology knowledge for economic and public benefit. Leveraging cutting-edge engineering biology technology to address environmental problems, including the contaminations of PFAS ‘forever chemicals’ and other pollutants, has become a strategic priority area of research in the UK, and indeed worldwide. Collaborative effort is key to developing and identifying sustainable solutions to address a range of emerging challenges.

Event Programme

We are currently finalising the conference programme, please check back soon!
Topics covered will include PFAS bioremediation and engineering biology/synthetic biology for environmental solutions.

Keynote Speakers

We are delighted to announce our two keynote speakers are from Princeton University, USA:
Prof. Peter Jaffé, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Princeton University, USA. Title (tentative): Natural bacterial strains for PFAS defluorination
Prof. Joshua Atkinson, Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental, Princeton University, USA. Title (tentative): Synthetic biology approaches in environmental applications

Early Career Researchers – apply to present!

The workshop will also feature a session dedicated to early career researchers (ECRs) with a series of 5-minute presentations. We invite ECRs to submit an application for a talk on their work and most recent research advances on innovations in this workshop defined area. A jury, composed of professionals and researchers, will vote for the best early career researcher’s presentation, with a best presentation prize of £100 (as vouchers) and the runner-up for a price of £50 (as vouchers) being awarded during the workshop!

Applications for a 5-minute early career researcher presentation can be submitted to Kristell Le Corre Pidou via k.s.lecorrepidou@cranfield.ac.uk using the Flash Presentation Application Form. Applications must include:

– A presentation title.
– A short abstract (not more than 200 words).
– A short bio (100 words max).
– A profile picture.

The deadline for submitting your application for 5-minute early career researcher presentation is 25 May 2025.
Please note that we have a limited number of short presentations slots, so if you apply for a talk, we cannot guarantee that your talk will be selected.

Cost

The workshop is free to attend.

Financial support for ECRs

There is financial support available for a limited number of Early Career Researchers (ECRs). Research students, postdocs, early career research staff (or equivalent), can apply for the financial support for travel and subsistence (indicative cap of £200) to attend the workshop. For more information, or to apply for financial support, please email info@ebicentre.co.uk

Registration

The Environmental Biotechnology Network (EBNet) and Environmental Biotechnology Innovation Centre (EBIC) are jointly running this workshop in order to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange between academia and industry, scientists and engineers, universities and practitioners.
