Flexible Funding for Interdisciplinary Translational Research

EBIC’s Flexible Funding, made possible by a funding injection from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), aims to incentivise and help support SME and early career researcher participation under EBIC. Flexible funding for Interdisciplinary translational research (ITR) has been allocated to support the implementation of new technologies, troubleshoot challenges, and conduct problem- solving research. This funding also provides research engagement vouchers and support EDI-focused sub-projects.

Aim

To drive ITRR to support and fund innovation in Environmental Biotechnology that will accelerate the transfer of ideas from fundamental research to real-world application at scale.

Areas of focus to include:

  • Synbio-enabled biosensing for environmental monitoring and surveillance
  • Pollution mitigation and environmental bioremediation
  • Water and Waste treatment
  • Resource recovery and circular economy
  • Sustainable industrial processes
  • Policy Innovation and Development, Integration of Engineering Biology into Policy Frameworks, and Capacity Building
  • Public Understanding and Perception of Engineered Biotechnology and Biotechnological Solutions

Applicant Eligibility

This call prioritises submissions by ECRs (early career researchers) within EBIC. Mentoring and support from EBIC PIs are welcomed and encouraged.

Applications may be submitted by individuals or groups and can involve collaborations between academia and industry. However, a single lead academic contact  – involved in EBIC – is required, as funds will be awarded to one academic partner. In case of doubt regarding your eligibility for funding by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) under the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, please consult the UKRI BBSRC website at: https://www.ukri.org/councils/bbsrc/guidance-for-applicants/check-if-youre-eligible-for-funding/

Collaboration

The lead applicant for the Flexible Funding must be involved in EBIC, however, industrial and external collaborations are welcomed. Our partners can be found here: EBIC partners
